What is Zepbound Used For?

Zepbound is an injectable prescription medication designed to aid adults with obesity or those who are overweight and have weight-related medical conditions in losing weight and maintaining weight loss. It should be used in combination with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Warning: Risk of Thyroid C-Cell Tumors

Zepbound has been linked to thyroid tumors, including thyroid cancer, in rats. It is currently unknown whether Zepbound could cause thyroid tumors or medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) in humans. Inform your provider if you experience a lump or swelling in your neck, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, or shortness of breath, as these may be signs of thyroid cancer.

Do not use Zepbound if you or any of your family members have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or have been diagnosed with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).

Who Should Take Zepbound?

Zepbound is FDA-approved for chronic weight management in adults who meet one of the following criteria:

  • A body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher (classified as obesity).
  • A BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, or heart disease.

Before prescribing Zepbound, your healthcare provider will review your personal and family medical history and ask for a list of any medications or supplements you are currently taking. This is to ensure that Zepbound is safe for you, as certain health conditions may increase the risk of using this medication. For example, Zepbound should not be used by individuals who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant. Additionally, it is contraindicated in people with severe gastrointestinal diseases.

How Should Zepbound be Administered?

Each box of Zepbound includes four single-dose prescription pens. To administer Zepbound, you inject the medication subcutaneously into your abdomen, thigh, or upper arm once a week, rotating the injection site with each dose. The medication is available in six different dosage strengths. Typically, healthcare providers recommend starting with a low dose of 2.5 milligrams (mg) weekly, then increasing the dose by 2.5 mg every four weeks until reaching a maintenance dose of 5 mg, 10 mg, or 15 mg.
